Flash Video Difficulties

| | Comments (89)

We have received feedback indicating that some users are experiencing issues either installing or using the latest version of Adobe Flash player on the site. We are doing what we can to improve these issues, particularly those regarding the required Flash player upgrade. Our investigation so far has uncovered that other sites are having similar issues with Flash player upgrades. The most common culprit is believed to be a faulty Flash player installation. If you are having trouble viewing a flash video or with upgrading your Flash player we highly recommend the following:

1) Close all browser windows.
2) Uninstall Flash Player using the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller.
Note: Some users have reported greater success if they reboot at this time.
3) Reinstall the Flash Player Plugin from Adobe.

If you continue to have a difficult time viewing Flash content on Screencast.com we want to know about it! Please contact TechSmith's Technical Support team here, or feel free to leave a comment below.

UPDATE (July 31st, 2008) - Wow, lots of comments! It is clear that there are some additional issues that uninstalling and reinstalling are not correcting. Here is where we are at with those issues reported in the comments below:

  1. "The video I am watching seems as though it has sound and I can't hear anything." -- I haven't heard much about this; if you are having this issue please contact support such that we can track it down.
  2. "The video is in a very small box and is much to small to view correctly." -- Again, I have no additional information on this, please contact support such that we can find out why this is happening.
  3. "On some videos I only see a black box where the video should be and no play button." -- This was an issue with our site, when the first frame of the video could not be read the Flash Player refused to play the video. This should be corrected as of July 22nd, 2008.
  4. "On some videos the first frame and play button appear but when I click the play button I only see a black square." -- Again, I need more information on this. If you are having this problem please contact support so they can start getting more information on the issue.
  5. "The video won't play! I need HELP!!" -- I would really like to help you! But I can't have an effective dialog with you on the blog! Luckily we have a full department of people trained to help you. Further, they help me a great deal by gathering additional information about the problem so our team can get it fixed as soon as possible! PLEASE contact them using this form: TechSmith Support. Or call, +1.517.381.2300, or 800.517.3001 (U.S. & Canada only), between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm EST, Monday - Friday.

UPDATE (August 26th, 2008) - Regarding issue number four from above, "On some videos the first frame and play button appear but when I click the play button I only see a black square" ...

  • We've learned from reports to support that videos which have a pound sign (#) or ampersand (&) in the file name cause the video feed to fail every time the video is played. Renaming the file and uploading it again will resolve this problem but our team is working to fix the issue.
  • We've also determined that some internet traffic to Screencast.com was degraded such that video data transfers were occasionally interrupted. In the case of Flash video the result looked the same as the issue above, clicking play resulted in a black square being displayed instead of the video. We believe this has been resolved.

Also new issue has been reported: "The area where I expect to see the video is not there, instead there is just the link to this blog post." We've found that having an apostrophe (') in the file name will prevent the video from being displayed. We are going to fix this issue.

I am very frustrated because it is 9:30 pm trying to study and do some work. And this system is difficult. Why are you guys making this so difficult. I just want to cry.

sometimes when i embed my jings the movies do not appea. I just get "Click here to use this control" and then nothing

Quote floater

I submitted this one through Support, but thought I would add it here for reference:

I have created a Camtasia 5 project and rendered the output as an .swf file. I uploaded that .swf file to screencast.com. When playing the flash, it runs through the recording within a few seconds, even though the recording is really > 1 minute long. As a troubleshooting step, we took the original project of the same recording and uploaded to Screencast.com through Camtasia, but it produced the same results.

Any ideas? I checked the knowledge base, but couldn't find any similar hits.

Quote floater

Update: Just got an answer back from the Support Center. It's a known issue with flash.

Workaround: Add audio to your track, and it should work fine. I haven't tried it out yet, but will post if that doesn't work for some reason.

Hi Paul,

I'm pleased to hear that Technical Support was able to help you out. I wanted to thank you for bringing up the issue and pointing out that we don't have it documented online. Camtasia Studio is planning an update to correct this bug soon and we've added an online help question to our support center thanks to your inquiry, http://techsmith.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/techsmith.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1404.

Yes, I have to uninstall, and reinstall, on a daily basis, sometimes twice a day.

Michael,

That must be frustrating! What types of problems are you seeing that indicate you need to reinstall again? Are they resolved once you've reinstalled? I am very interested to know more about what causes this; do you have a case with our support staff I could look into?

Hi Frank,

While you are logged in and viewing the picture there is a link underneath it which will allow you to download the picture. From there you can set it as your desktop background as you normally would on your OS.

Hi Lauri,

Sorry to hear about your difficulty with a video we're hosting. Typically a "forever to load" issue occurs either because the video is very large (as Screencast.com does not change the size of the video) or because your connection is having issues. What type of connection do you have? Is the video still slow to load? Have you tested the speed of your connection using a tool such as http://www.speedtest.net/? We monitor the performance and connection to our servers 24 hours a day should an issue arise it is addressed immediately. Please let us know if you continue to have difficulty such that we can investigate.

Great program. I'd love to see a few addressed:

1. There should be someway to resize the video to the browser size. I'm trying to use this in the classroom and I have to scroll up and down depending on where I'm clicking on the video.

2. The five minute limit is a bit limiting...though I think this may not be a bad thing (at least from my students perspective).

3. You have to be able to embed these in different sizes. If I embed this file on my blog, it bleeds off into my sidebar. If I change the height/width in the html, I only see a quarter of the video.

4. I'd love to be able to save or share this as a file other than .swf. Let me save it to my desktop as an .avi and I'll be in love foreva.

Quote floater

Do not make the videos too heavy. Most people still have 512kb connections. And you could use the .flv format that is much easier to put through slow connections.

Just seeing a blank screen. Telling me to uninstall Flash and reinstall it isn't very practical when I'm on a work computer with restricted XP admi access which prevents the addition or upgrading of software.

There must be a non-Flash option for this - YouTube seem to manage...

Quote floater

Can we change the names of the videos and images to make it easier to find and use? Or even a way to tag them so they can be more easily identified?

I see so much potential here - it is exciting. I am also having the flash player hiccup.

Quote floater

I did uninstall, supposedly did "sucessfully" re-install flashplayer, re-booted and it won't open. Old Dog...no new tricks

Quote floater

Removed old flash player, downloaded and installed new one. No sound with video.

used to be able to view screencasts fine. now, when follow a jing url i see a super-tiny box which, when i click on it, starts playing the video, but it's far too small to see anything. using windows vista, IE7, FF, have uninstalled & reinstalled AFP & rebooted & still that super tiny-box is all i see.

Quote floater

Hi there.

How can I resize the video so that it actually fits onto my screen?

I am using both a laptop - and the videos I have seen so far are tiny - approx 8 x 8 cms.

Today, plugged the laptop into my monitor and the video is so large, I cannot see it all.

I am using the Pearson training sessions.

Thanks

The trouble is with Youtube or any website that uses Adobe. There is always a message stating to install the latest Adobe Flash Player when I have already done so. Therefore, I have to uninstall and reinstall anytime I want to view Youtube or any other website that uses Adobe. Kodak Gallery has a box to click on if you already have Adobe and that helps.

Quote floater

Hi Joel,
Sounds like you're using our Jing project ( http://www.jingproject.com/ ) which I also enjoy for quick casual conversation over the web. With regards to resizing the video, you can certainly make the video smaller when you record by making a smaller selection. However, I know the Jing team has heard this feedback from a lot of the users and is considering tackling a solution for it. Indeed, five minutes feels short...but it feels like a long time as a viewer. The embedding size is again dependent on the recorded video size; smaller videos will fit on blogs. Indeed .avi's are great for saving raw video on your desktop but their benefit ends there. These videos are designed to play on the web and thus .avi was not a good choice. Have you tried our Camtasia Studio product? It is a full featured product (and not just a test project that we're trying out like Jing) that we make that does everything you're looking for and is intended for creating educational videos (perfect for use in the classroom). You can encode the video to any size you'd like, any format you'd like, and record for as long as you want. Check it out and download a trial at http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp

Peder, Gail, Scott, and Jeremy:
Videos that are "too heavy," a resolution that is difficult to view, have poor audio, or do not have player controls are having these issues because the video uploaded to Screencast.com causes them. Screencast.com puts account owners in control of how the video will be presented to the viewer by allowing them to upload video of any type. If an account owner wants a video that plays well on an iPhone, they can upload one that does and we won't modify it. If they prefer a high resolution high quality video, they can upload that as well. To allow them this freedom, Screencast.com does not modify the original file in any way; thus we preserve the original quality, size, and file type. Screencast.com also does not modify these things when the quality is poor, the size is unreasonable, or the type impractical for the web. Screencast.com does not presume to know what the account owner intended. To change the video, the account owner will need to modify the video and upload it again. You should inform them of your difficulty.

Anonymous,
You're right, it isn't practical. It is unfortunate that the issue exists at all. We are continuing to investigate solutions and have hope that we can find a way to make the Adobe Flash Player work for all our customers as intended. As for YouTube, they have the same issues; the issue is not with the website but with the flash player installed on your system. Regardless, we are still trying to find ways to detect and correct the issue. We do not know what causes it.

Belinda,
Yes, you can change the name of the video. In your Library on Screencast.com (while logged in) you can navigate to your video, hover over its thumbnail, and click the edit action.
If you are using Jing or Camtasia Studio to create your video you can edit the title prior to uploading.

My users ran into the same error message that asked them to upgrade their flash file when they can't launch the movie that I created in Cam5. What I found out in sending my production files to my users, Outlook blocked the swfobject.sj file! So once they're able to save this file in the same folder with the rest of the production files, they can see my movie fine.

Hope this helped.

I have tried on several occasions to access this to no avail. I think it's too much to ask me to uninstall software and reinstall software. Out of my remit I'm afraid. This is why I am a Massage Therapist and not a computer programmer. Perhaps this video can be added to utube and watched there as I am yet to accept a booking from RTG as I haven't been trained and I can't get the training til I watch the videos. Catch 22? This is losing me money....

I downloaded Jing and the above address no longer works...any reason why this is happening?

With the "line in" (with no noise at all broadcasted), all the swf was black with no play button. With the "microphone in" chosen in Audio Preferences of Windows (XP), it works fine ! No need to speak, just choose a input with "noise" [even a very little] (tested OK with and without voice). So it's OK even you record a quite room without to speak, but with, for example, a input like "line in" that have NO NOISE at all on it (in my case and at this moment), it doesn't works.

I tested the uninstall/reinstall method with reboot after the uninstall, and doesn't change : it's, like before, totally random between working fine, doesn't working at all (black swf directly) and semi-working (a play button with the first image of the video in background but with a click on the play button, I have a black swf and not my video played [wait a long time doesn't change]).

So, need to wait a GOOD solution that really works always ! ;-)

Hey, guys! I just rolled out a series of about a dozen Jing casts to demonstrate how to use a software system that we're implementing for collaboration purposes across about a dozen organizations. Initially, everything worked great. Now, however, i can't view anything i have previously recorded. Like many above, i uninstalled and re-installed Flash, but still no-go. I'm feeling a little anxiety because i sent the link references to all our noobs telling them that i had elaborate tutorials listed through Jing. If they can't access any of them or are experiencing the same problem, I'll be be a little embarrassed. Can you help, please? I see from above that lots of other people are having similar issue(s). Is there a fix in play? I'd sure like to NOT have to re-record a dozen walk-throughs. Thanks! -jack

I have used Jing for some time and introduced a friend to the project. She made a video and sent me the link. I get the audio fine on my PC but the video is a small box from her Mac. She could view my video just fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, with no improvment. Any other suggestions?

Quote floater

I get the black screen when I try to play back some Jing videos. I found that small picture sizes worked fine, but anything above about 640x480 resulted in a black screen with no play button.

I tried waiting for a long time in case it was a download speed problem, but I gave up after waiting several minutes, so I don't think it's a speed problem.

I think somewhere between version 4 and 5 you guys lost it. I never had a problem with version four and am very sorry that I upgraded. It's been the most difficult process ever to get a video uploaded to play. It doesn't seem to include all the necessary files. What a drag. Change the name to "Snagtasia" cause its got many snags in it. Take a step back and look at what you did right with version 4. Change the name to version 5 and let us get on with the program.

Hi,

I only see a black screen after I had paste the link into my browser (firefox / ms iexplorer 7). I uninstall and install the Flash plugin but it doesn't work.

This problem simply consits on 2 of 6 workstations. This 2 workstations owns the same Intel graphic- and audio-chipset. I can't change the source of audio because there is only one device to choose.

If I capture a video with jing on an other workstation everything works fine.

Could you help me please?

Quote floater

Are you guys going to fix this obvious issue, it seems to have been a problem for a while - per the many posts. I need to use this program for my website and can't - I have tried the uninstall of adobe and this is no help at all!, I realise there is an issue with the adobe flash player, but surely between screencast and adobe you could work together to sort it out!. Please fix this sooner rather than later.
Otherwise I love the site - but it would be good if you could view my movies. Regards Em.

The audio is okay but the video is just a series of screen captures, some are actually pretty funny (guess I needed to shave and have proper lighting). I was going to send to a friend to show her that jinging was the new google but the video just jerks along while the audio plays perfectly. So, will try again, but any suggestions as to how to make the video and audio actually sync?

However, problem still remains. Just in case this is useful: I use a Dell M4300 laptop running XP Professional, Internet Explorer 7, screen resolution 1920x1200. User of latest Snag-It 9 version.

I have been using Jing / Screencast for about a year now....the video replay at Screencast is currently not working nearly as well as it used to. I tried the unistall reinstall of Adobe too. What specific settings do you advise in the Internet "Security" settings area ??...specifically in the Active X areas ??

I currently have the general "Security" setting set to "Medium" and I now seem to be able to access OK....but there is still a 10 to 15 second delay often before a newer video starts. Curiously the older videos I uploaded to Screencast say 6 months ago do not seem to have a delay upon starting to view them, and they seem to be more reliable to play than recently uploaded videos.

Thanks....!!

"On some videos the first frame and play button appear but when I click the play button I only see a black square."

Yes...the above is often happening now for me now too. Sometimes when I wait maybe 15 to 20 seconds the video will start playing....sometimes not. I did the Adobe uninstall reinstall thing. I currently have IE (XP) security set to "Medium" and added "screencast.com" as a "TrustedSite".

I typically always save a new Jing video to an embedded file on my computer upon completion. Then I go to Screencast and upload the video files I wish from these saved files. Presently when I open any of my saved Jing videos in IE on my computer directly from my own saved Jing video files, they all play perfectly well without a hitch. But then (like this morning) when I go to Screencast to play a newly uploaded video in my Jing folder....it will not work...(just like as mentioned above ..."On some videos the first frame and play button appear but when I click the play button I only see a black square." ) ..and it will sometimes not work for others from a link posted on a web site either....and a new video link would not work for me this morning also. Some of my other older videos at Screencast would play OK at Screencast this morning....others would not....some are slow to load to even try to play. I found yesterday that the "Medium" security setting worked....this morning "Medium" or "Medium-High" settings did not work to play some things at Screencast. My take is there is something haywire at Screencast presently......Screencast used to work flawlessly for me.... (say over 3 months ago).....now it does not work well.....any suggestions ??.....

Thanks......

Playing with opening videos at Screencast this morning (Saturday)....again some files in my Jing folder will open and play OK....others do not....moving from file to file you sometimes get the black screen after clicking the triangle....some of my older videos seem to open and play more easily....then going to another folder....the little screenshots at the left of titles did not appear at Screencast....then going back to my Jing folder the little screenshots of files also did not then appear....this identical behavior happen yesterday also....again, Screencast used to work flawlessly for me (like late last year or early this year)....now it does not. I have put Jing in a "Trusted Zone" in Kaspersky, my antivirus program, and it has not make a difference opening files at Screencast. And again, I reinstalled Adobe Flash for the second time yesterday. I can also play videos OK at Utube and Google OK this morning...do those require Adobe Flash to play ??....and again...I can currently go to saved Jing videos in my own files and open and easily play OK in IE or Quicktime just fine....I assume when they open in IE they are using Adobe Flash also ??...

Thanks much for all your time on this.....

Quote floater

Additional notes...I added an exclusion mask for the Techsmith folder (& all sub folders) in Program Files in Kaspersky (my antivirus)....just to make sure there was no hang up there....

A few minutes ago at Screencast: files in my Jing folder played OK...I believe all opened OK except one in another folder....I was excited !! Then I went to several web sites and clicked on Screencast video links I had posted there that have opened previously for me (sometimes)...these would not load or play at Screencast currently. Then, immediately going back to Screencast, and after logging in again, the little screenshots at the left of the titles would not show now ....so could try nothing....

It kind of seems for me like the luck of the draw when going to Screencast now...whether it will work OK or not.

Thanks again for your time on this....

Hi...

I updated the drivers for my Intel graphics chips on both computers yesterday. Then did the uninstall / reinstall of Adobe Flash again. Now opening files and replay at Screencast seems to be working without a hitch !! ...and this is with Hardware Acceleration set to Full and Internet Security set to Medium. Screencast links on a website now open and play easily too.

So....perhaps the new graphics chip drivers did the trick ....

Thanks for all your time on this....

Jing files saved on my computer always play perfectly without a hitch in IE or QuickTime.

Have tried different settings on IE hardware acceleration....updated my graphics chip drivers...redid Adobe Flash per your instructions above 3 times...

Similar problems on 2 computers.

Thanks again for your time on this....

I'm having similiar problems as Alfred - I see first frame and play button and after that black rectangle. Some videos work and some don't. Tried on several computers at work and got the same result.

Interesting thing is that a movie that does not play from any of work computers plays just fine from home computer. We also tried bypassing our server with no success. I noticed that larger movies usually cause the problem.

Thanks.

Update: looks like I was just lucky yesterday at home. Today I get the same error as with my work computers: after clicking Play I get black rectangle on some videos. Some work just fine...

I cannot get tutorials to play after re-installing the adobe plug in, rebooting, and and trying both IE and Firefox. The file name I am trying to view does not contain any of the problematic symbols mentioned, and I have tried several times in case it was a traffic issue on the site. Please help!

Carmen,

I cannot help you because I don't have enough information. I don't even know what videos are giving you trouble. Further, gathering this information or communicating with you personally in the comments on a blog just isn't practical or functional.

If you send the exact same text to support, on this form: http://techsmith.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/techsmith.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php
They will contact you to get the information needed to solve your problem. They will then help you fix the issue or turn over the details needed to our development team such that we can fix the issue.

If you don't do that... well then I am stuck and can't help you or anyone else having the same issue. :-(

Mac User,

I am not sure what you're difficulty is... Screencast.com works well on Intel-Macs, did you contact support to explain the trouble you were having?

Video initially opens but clicking the play button does not play the video.

I have already tried to remove the video, rename it with no special characters and upload it again. Same problem. I have also removed flash player and made sure I had an updated version installed. Same problem.
